Conquering Carry-On Only Packing

Woman's hands with carryon suitcase, neck pillow, and backpack

With summer just around the corner, we’re getting excited about the journeys ahead. As former tour guides, we became accustomed to living out of carry-on suitcases for weeks — sometimes months — at a time. Along the way, we learned that packing light isn’t just a strategy; it’s a kind of freedom.

Still, we understand how daunting it can feel to create the perfect carry-on composition for international travel. How do you prepare for changing weather, long travel days, beautiful dinners, and spontaneous adventures… all within one small bag?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the options, we’ve got you covered.

Carry-on only packing is about minimizing essentials and maximizing possibility. Imagine floating through the airport, skipping baggage claim, hopping effortlessly onto trains, and feeling gloriously light on your feet. Sound good? Let’s pack smart, together!

Find the Perfect Fit

Before you pack a single item, check your airline’s size and weight restrictions for carry-on luggage. This becomes your packing bible.

Carry-on allowances often shrink outside the U.S. While many domestic flights allow bags up to 22 inches, international carriers frequently require 21 inches or less — and some are far stricter about weight. Double-check your airline’s policy before departure to avoid an unpleasant gate-side repacking session.

embrace the capsule wardrobe

Curate your perfect summer capsule wardrobe

The secret to carry-on travel is versatility. Curate a simple summer capsule wardrobe built around pieces that mix, match, and layer easily. Neutral colors work beautifully here, allowing fewer pieces to create more combinations. Think:

  • comfortable tees,

  • a breezy button-down,

  • a lightweight sweater,

  • a versatile dress,

  • well-loved jeans or trousers,

  • and a scarf that instantly elevates an outfit.

The goal isn’t endless options. It’s effortless combinations.

The Power of Multi-taskers

The best travel items do double duty.

A lightweight scarf becomes an airplane blanket, beach wrap, or extra layer on chilly evenings. Quick-dry clothing can be washed overnight. Comfortable walking shoes that still look polished enough for dinner are worth their weight in gold.

Every item should earn its place in your bag.

befriend travel-sized essentials

Decant your favorite shampoo, conditioner, and lotions into TSA-approved containers, or better yet, embrace solid toiletries. Shampoo bars, conditioner bars, and solid sunscreen save space and eliminate spill anxiety.

We also never travel without a small packet of travel detergent. A quick sink wash can easily extend your wardrobe and make carry-on only travel possible for weeks at a time.

packing cubes are your best friend

Packing cubes create space and organization

Packing cubes create space and organizational Zen

If there’s one carry-on game changer we swear by, it’s packing cubes.

Packing cubes keep your suitcase organized, compact, and remarkably easy to navigate. Instead of digging through layers of clothing to find one shirt, everything has its place — tops in one cube, underlayers in another, cords and chargers tucked neatly away. They also help compress clothing, allowing you to maximize every inch of precious suitcase space.

Beyond the practicality, packing cubes simply make travel feel calmer. Unpacking becomes easier, repacking takes minutes, and your carefully packed carry-on is far less likely to descend into chaos midway through the trip.

A thoughtfully organized suitcase can make even a small carry-on feel surprisingly spacious.

Embrace the power of “no”

This may be the hardest lesson of all.

Resist the urge to pack “just in case” items. Most of the things we worry about never happen — and if they do, chances are you can find what you need locally.

Packing light requires a little trust:
trust in flexibility,
trust in simplicity,
and trust that you truly need less than you think.

Bonus Tip

Wear your bulkiest shoes and clothes on the plane! This frees up precious space in your carry-on.

Remember, packing light is about freedom. It's about the joy of exploration, unburdened by luggage woes. So, pack smart, pack light, and get ready to experience the world with a lighter heart (and suitcase)!

Why WE LOVE CARRY-ON ONLY TRAVEL

For us, packing light has become about far more than efficiency.

It’s about freedom.

Freedom from baggage claim lines. Freedom from hauling oversized luggage across cobblestone streets and crowded train platforms. Freedom to move through the world more easily and more spontaneously.

And perhaps most importantly, it’s a reminder that the best parts of travel are never the things we pack. They’re the moments we experience once we arrive.

So pack smart, pack light, and leave a little extra room for wonder.
