Montenegro
10 days/9 nights: May 15-25, 2027
Detour with Us
You come to Montenegro thinking it is small. Then you begin to move, and the scale keeps changing. In a single morning, you can stand above a canyon deeper than any in Europe and, by afternoon, taste salt on the Adriatic breeze. We are a country of mountains that fall into the sea, of monasteries on quiet islands, of recipes carried by grandmothers and grapes shaped by stubborn stone. What I hope you feel here is not spectacle, but belonging. Sit at our tables. Walk our ridgelines. Listen. Montenegro reveals itself slowly.
highlights include
Stand above Europe’s deepest canyon in UNESCO-protected Durmitor National Park
Ride the emerald pulse of the Tara River through soaring canyon walls
Glide across Skadar Lake’s mirrored waters past island monasteries and pelicans
Ascend Mount Lovćen to Njegoš’s marble mausoleum and Adriatic vistas
Savor mountain pies, smoked prosciutto, estate wines, and lakeside seafood
itinerary
“At the moment of the creation of our planet, the most beautiful merging of land and sea occurred at the Montenegrin seaside. ”
Montenegro reveals itself in contrasts that feel almost improbable: salt air and stone towns giving way to glacial lakes, wild rivers, and high mountain pastures within a matter of hours. Along this route, we move through places where food is still made by hand, wine carries the imprint of soil and weather, and hospitality is offered without performance. We’ll float rivers, share meals in eco-villages, learn from cooks, winemakers, and guides, and spend time in landscapes that demand attention rather than explanation. The learning here is experiential and relational, rooted in shared tables, open roads, and conversations that make clear how deeply people and place remain intertwined in Montenegro.
Day 1: Arrival in Dubrovnik
Saturday, May 15, 2027
Our journey begins in Dubrovnik, where we’ll use the day to settle into the rhythm of the Adriatic on our own terms. The city rewards unhurried wandering: walk the medieval walls and fortresses that trace nearly two kilometers above terracotta roofs and sea; step inside the Rector’s Palace, a quiet study in civic balance; or visit the Franciscan Monastery, home to one of Europe’s oldest working pharmacies. Some may ferry to Lokrum’s monastery and peacocks, drift toward the Elaphiti Islands, or glimpse the city’s modern mythology at its Game of Thrones filming sites. The afternoon is yours to explore before we gather and begin our journey together.

day 2: Montenegro by Speedboat
Sunday, May 16, 2027
We depart Dubrovnik and cross into Montenegro, where the Adriatic narrows into the luminous waters of Boka Bay. By speedboat, we trace quiet coves and stone villages before stepping onto Our Lady of the Rocks, a small island shaped by centuries of devotion. From sea to mountains, the landscape shifts quickly. In the village of Nudo, we linger over lunch at Winery Dabović—traditional dishes prepared by hand, wines expressive of soil and season, and stories shared across the table. By late afternoon, we ascend toward Žabljak, settling into Eco Village Brezna for a peaceful evening beneath high mountain skies.

day 3: Tara River Rafting
Monday, May 17, 2027
Morning carries us into the canyonlands of the Tara, where Europe’s deepest gorge opens in stone and light. We raft stretches of emerald water that alternate between calm reflection and surging rapids, the river’s cold spray and mountain air sharpening every sense. Laughter rises easily here; and so does awe. After a riverside lunch, we return by way of the Durmitor Ring—one of the region’s most scenic roads—where high pastures, glacial valleys, and wide skies unfold in slow succession. By evening, we arrive in Žabljak and settle into our quiet mountain retreat.

day 4: Durmitor National Park
Tuesday, May 18, 2027
We linger a little longer in Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape since 1980—protected not for spectacle alone, but for the rare meeting of wild geology and living tradition. These are the “mountain eyes” of Montenegro: glacial lakes like Black Lake (Crno Jezero), where we take an easy shoreline walk, peaks and pines doubled in reflection. At the Tara Bridge, Europe’s deepest canyon yawns open in turquoise and stone—those inclined may zip-line across its sweep for a jolt of perspective. We trade altitude for appetite with a hands-on pie-making visit before continuing to Kolašin and the comfort of Bianca Resort & Spa.

day 5: Bjelasica & Biogradska Gorda
Wednesday, May 19, 2027
Today we climb high into Bjelasica, where ridge lines open and meadows roll toward the horizon. A jeep carries us along forest tracks to a summer katun, then we trade wheels for hooves, riding horseback through alpine grasses and quiet trails. At Eco Village Vranjak—perched at 1,800 meters—we’re welcomed with mountain abundance: kačamak, pršut, fresh cheeses, warm priganice, yogurt, and wild blueberry juice, all drawn from the land around us. In the afternoon, we enter Biogradska Gora National Park, home to one of Europe’s last primeval forests, its ancient trees and glacial lake held in near-mythic stillness. Dinner at Savardak returns us to hearth and story.
Hotel: Bianca Resort & Spa | Activity Level: Moderate | Meals: B, L, D
day 6: Skadar Lake & Family Wine
Thursday, May 20, 2027
We turn south toward Skadar Lake National Park, the Balkans’ largest freshwater expanse, where sky and water seem to settle into one another. A private boat carries us past floating waterlilies and island monasteries, some still quietly active, as herons lift from the reeds and—if we are lucky—the great Dalmatian pelican glides overhead. On board, we taste local delicacies shaped by lake and field. In the fertile Crmnica valley, we pause at family-run Winery Kopitović, where indigenous grapes like Vranac thrive. After lunch and tasting, we continue to the Adriatic coast and settle into Budva for the evening at Iberostar Waves Slavija.

day 7: Leisure Day in Budva
Friday, May 21, 2027
After days shaped by rivers and mountains, today unfolds at your own rhythm along the Adriatic. Some may wander Budva’s Old Town, its stone lanes and citadel holding centuries of Venetian and Mediterranean influence. Others might linger at the beach, swim in clear salt water, or follow the coastal path toward Sveti Stefan for wide sea views. For those drawn to history, nearby monasteries and quiet hilltop villages offer a more contemplative pace. Or simply remain at the hotel—spa, terrace, and unstructured time restoring body and thought. The day is intentionally open: space to revisit what has stirred you most.

day 8: Lovćen & Prosciutto
Saturday, May 22, 2027
We rise from the coast toward the heights of Lovćen, ascending by cable car as the Bay of Kotor falls away beneath us and limestone ridges gather in every direction. In Lovćen National Park—Montenegro’s spiritual heart—we climb to the Njegoš Mausoleum, perched at 1,657 meters, its marble honoring the poet-philosopher who helped shape the nation. From here, views sweep from mountains to the Adriatic horizon. In the stone village of Njeguši, we taste its most famous inheritance: delicately smoked prosciutto, sliced by hand and shared with local cheeses and rakija. A serpentine descent returns us to Kotor for the evening.
Hotel: Hotel Vardar | Activity Level: Moderate | Meals: B, L
day 9: Historic Kotor & Cooking
Sunday, May 23, 2027
We step into Kotor’s Old Town, where a local guide leads us through narrow lanes, Romanesque churches, and stories layered in stone beneath Venetian walls. Late morning brings us into a traditional Montenegrin home in the quiet Zlatne Njive neighborhood. In a hands-on cooking class, we prepare regional dishes—vegetarian, seafood, or meat—chosen in advance, learning techniques and family traditions as we go. The table becomes our classroom, and we share the meal we’ve created together. In the evening, we gather at Restaurant Galion overlooking the bay for a farewell dinner—seafood, wine, and one last Adriatic sunset.
Hotel: Hotel Vardar | Activity Level: Moderate | Meals: B, L, D
day 10: Farewell, Montenegro
Monday, May 24, 2027
Our time together draws to a close this morning. We assist with transfers back to Dubrovnik for international departures, or onward connections for those continuing their travels along the Adriatic and beyond. The roads we’ve traced—river canyons, mountain passes, stone towns, and shared tables—now settle into memory. Montenegro has a way of staying with you: in the taste of mountain cheese, the scent of pine and salt air, the echo of water against limestone. As always, the detour ends, but the stories travel on.
