Our journey begins in Croatia’s vibrant capital, Zagreb. We’ll gather at our hotel at 3 pm for a welcome meeting to get to know each other and go over the days ahead. Then we’ll set off on an orientation walk through Zagreb’s charming streets, taking in its lively squares, historic architecture, and welcoming vibe. Along the way, we’ll visit the Cravatarium museum to learn about the fascinating origins of the cravat—Croatia’s stylish gift to the world—and raise a toast to the start of our adventure. We’ll end the day with a delicious welcome dinner, sharing good food and great company.

This morning, we’ll set out on a walking tour of Zagreb, winding through the city's historic streets and vibrant neighborhoods. Along the way, we’ll stop to sample a few local foodie favorites—perhaps fresh štrukli from a beloved bakery or a taste of regional cheese at the market. Afterward, the afternoon and evening are yours to enjoy at your own pace. You might choose to relax at a sidewalk café, visit a museum, or even hop into a classic Yugo for a quirky, guided driving tour of the city’s lesser-known corners. However you spend it, Zagreb is yours to explore.

Nestled into a hillside, its ivy-covered arcades honor Croatia’s most notable figures. From there, we travel west toward the coast, pausing for a relaxing lunch along the way. By afternoon, we arrive in the elegant seaside town of Opatija. A gentle stroll through its manicured streets and scenic coastal paths reveals refined architecture, lush parks, and stunning views. With its blend of history, charm, and natural beauty, Opatija is a graceful welcome to the Adriatic.

We’ll wandeer its winding streets, exploring art galleries, and learning about creative inspiration from the artists themselves. After soaking up the artsy atmosphere of Grožnjan, we’ll delve into another art: truffle hunting. We’ll head to Livade to learn the secrets behind Istria’s prized delicacy from a truffle hunter, enjoying the earthy flavors over a truffle-filled lunch before returning to Motovun for an evening at leisure.

It's time to head to the coast, but before we do, Istria has a few surprises in store. Our first stop is the small village of Krunčići, where you'll have the chance to taste some of the finest Croatian wines, showcasing the region’s rich viticulture. Next, we’ll head to the stunning Lim Canal, renowned for offering some of Croatia's best oysters, fresh from the sea. Near Vodnjan, we'll sample top-quality Croatian olive oil, a true highlight of the region's agricultural excellence. After these delicious experiences, we’ll unwind at our luxurious seaside hotel before venturing out for an orientation walk through the picturesque streets of Rovinj.

We’ll set off early for Pula, home to one of the world’s best-preserved Roman amphitheaters, built between 27 BC and 68 AD under Emperor Vespasian. This massive arena, once hosting gladiator battles for up to 23,000 spectators, still stands as a testament to Roman engineering. Our local guide will bring its history to life, from ancient gladiatorial combat and animal hunts, to medieval knight tournaments. Afterward, enjoy free time to wander Pula’s historic streets and savor lunch. The afternoon is yours to enoy Rovinj before we gather for a last night dinner together, celebrating new friendships and cherishing fond memories.

Yes! Our detours are the perfect way for children (and adults) to learn in action. We welcome and celebrate multi-generational travel. History class was never so fun!

Our detour begins in Zagreb at our first hotel, where we will meet for a welcome reception around 5 pm. Our trip ends in Rovinj. Nearby Pula airport offers connecting flights to destinations in Europe from where you may fly to your international airport home.

While this varies by detour, we generally plan to meet between 5-6 pm at our hotel on Day 1. If you plan to arrive a day early and want to stay in our trip hotel, please make arrangements with the hotel directly, indicating that you are part of our group.

Please plan to fly into Zagreb. Depending on your post-travel plans, you can connect back to Zagreb by train (3 hours) or by flight from Pula.

During the registration process you will have the opportunity to request single occupancy, if it is offered. Due to the boutique nature of our hotels, we are not always able to offer single accommodations, but are happy to pair you with another single traveler.

Yes. You must be able to carry your own luggage up at least three flights of stairs and on uneven ground for up to a quarter mile.

Dressler Detours are physically demanding. To enjoy the experience, you must be in good walking shape. The most active days may average 5 miles of walking (often over uneven surfaces and including lots of climbing/steps), lots of standing while listening to your guide during group sightseeing, and possibly stair-climbing while carrying your own bag up to your hotel room. This detour includes boat travel as well. We’ve included an activity guide for each day of our itinerary: light=mostly sedentary, moderate=walking 1-3 miles on mostly even ground, strenuous=walking 3+ miles on hills/uneven ground.
