Reef to Rainforest

14 days/13 nights: October 9-22, 2027

Detour with Us

Welcome to Australia, and a place of extraordinary scale and subtlety. Over these two weeks, I’m eager to share not just the highlights, but the rhythms of daily life here: the way coastal towns gather at sunset, the pride of regional farmers, the deep stories carried in land and sea. We’ll stand before one of the world’s great natural wonders, wander rainforest older than the Amazon, and sip wine shaped by generations of care. My hope is that you leave with more than photographs. I hope you carry a deeper understanding of this country’s landscapes, cultures, and quietly resilient spirit.

highlights include

  • Experience the wonder of the Great Barrier Reef

  • Glide above ancient rainforest on the Skyrail

  • Wander Melbourne’s art-filled laneways

  • Learn from Gumbaynggirr culture

  • Encounter kangaroos grazing freely at sunset

  • Meet a modern merino farmer in the High Country

  • Sip Semillon and Shiraz in Hunter Valley’s storied vineyards

  • Step behind the scenes of the Sydney Opera House

itinerary

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
— Dorothea Mackellar

Australia has always felt like the edge of the map—in the best possible way. It’s reef and rainforest, vineyard and surf coast, ancient story and modern swagger. This Detour blends the icons you’ve long imagined (the Great Barrier Reef, Sydney Harbour, the Opera House) with the moments you didn’t know to dream about—meeting a merino farmer in the high country, learning from Gumbaynggirr culture in Coffs Harbour, watching kangaroos graze at sunset. We move from Melbourne’s art-filled laneways to tropical Cairns, through small-town New South Wales, and finish in dazzling Sydney. Vast yet intimate, Australia unfolds in layers—generous, surprising, and unforgettable.

Day 1: Welcome to Melbourne

Saturday, October 9, 2027

We gather in Melbourne—stylish, creative, and proudly a little different. After settling into our centrally located hotel, we’ll meet as a group for a welcome drink and orientation walk through the neighborhood. Melbourne reveals itself in grand 19th-century architecture alongside edgy street art, hidden laneways filled with cafés, and a food scene that rivals anywhere in the world. Tonight’s dinner together sets the tone for the journey ahead: new friendships, shared stories, and the thrill of knowing we’re just getting started on our detour down under.

day 2: Culture in Melbourne

Sunday, October 10, 2027

Today we dive deeper into Australia’s cultural capital. A guided walking tour introduces us to Melbourne’s layered history, from gold rush prosperity to modern multicultural vibrancy. We’ll then explore the National Gallery of Victoria’s Australian collection with an expert guide, gaining insight into the country’s artistic identity and evolving voice. The afternoon is yours—perhaps more gallery time, café hopping, or boutique browsing in the city’s famous arcades. Melbourne rewards curiosity, and today invites you to wander at your own pace before we prepare for tomorrow’s tropical shift.

day 3: To Cairns

Monday, October 11, 2027

This morning we exchange cool-city sophistication for tropical warmth as we fly north to Cairns, gateway to two World Heritage–listed ecosystems. After settling into our hotel, we visit the Cairns Aquarium for an immersive introduction to the reef and rainforest environments we’re about to encounter firsthand. Coral systems, mangroves, and tropical species come into focus, adding context and anticipation to tomorrow’s adventure. The air feels different here—humid, salt-tinged, alive with possibility. Cairns has an easygoing, outdoorsy spirit, and tonight is free to explore the Esplanade, dine waterside, or simply rest and let the shift in climate and pace settle in.

day 4: Great Barrier Reef

Tuesday, October 12, 2027

Today is the kind of day that lingers long after the journey ends. We head out onto the Great Barrier Reef—the largest living structure on Earth and one of nature’s most intricate creations. Whether you snorkel above vibrant coral gardens or observe from a semi-submersible vessel, the reef reveals a world of astonishing color and quiet movement beneath the surface. Tropical fish flicker like confetti; coral formations stretch endlessly in every direction. Lunch is included as we spend unhurried hours immersed in this remarkable ecosystem. It’s awe-inspiring and humbling at once—a vivid reminder of beauty, fragility, and the wonder of our planet.

day 5: Kuranda Railway & Rainforest

Wednesday, October 13, 2027

We ascend into the mountains aboard the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway, winding past waterfalls and dense rainforest once linked to the region’s mining history. In Kuranda, the so-called “Village in the Rainforest,” you’ll have time to browse heritage markets, cuddle koalas, or flitter among butterflies. Our return journey floats above the canopy on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, offering sweeping views across the Wet Tropics—one of the oldest surviving rainforests on Earth. Suspended between earth and sky, we witness the layered textures of green below. Today blends engineering, ecology, and gentle exploration in unforgettable ways.

day 6: Cairns to Coffs Harbor

Thursday, October 14, 2027

We journey south today, flying to Brisbane before continuing by coach into New South Wales. As we travel the Pacific Highway, landscapes shift to fertile farmland shaped by volcanic soils, passing sugar cane fields, tropical fruit groves, and broad river valleys. It’s a reminder that Australia’s abundance isn’t only scenic; it’s agricultural and deeply regional. By early evening we arrive in Coffs Harbour, a coastal town framed by surf beaches and forested hills. The pace softens here. There’s salt in the air and space to exhale. Tonight’s relaxed dinner together introduces us to subtropical rhythms and a more intimate side of Australia.

day 7: Culture, Coast, & Kangaroos

Friday, October 15, 2027

Coffs Harbour reveals its depth today. At the Yarrila Arts Centre and Museum, we learn about the Gumbaynggirr people—the region’s Traditional Custodians—and the stacked history that shapes this coastline. Time by the sea follows: perhaps a swim at a sheltered beach or a walk along the harbor toward Muttonbird Island. Over fresh seafood (with options for all), we savor the flavors of the coast. A playful stop at the iconic “Big Banana” adds a bit of Australian whimsy. As evening light softens, we visit Look-At-Me-Now Headland, where Eastern Grey kangaroos graze peacefully in the evening sunshine.

day 8: Rainforest to High Country

Saturday, October 16, 2027

Leaving the coast behind, we travel inland through the lush Bellinger Valley to World Heritage–listed Dorrigo National Park. A short walk beneath towering subtropical rainforest immerses us in birdsong, filtered light, and ancient greenery. From the Skywalk, sweeping views stretch toward the coast we’ve just departed. We pause at dramatic waterfalls before crossing the Dorrigo Plateau toward Uralla in the New England High Country. The landscape opens into rolling pasture and wide skies. After settling in, we gather for a tasting of Hunter Valley wines and dinner together, with coast, rainforest, and countryside all woven into a single day’s journey.

day 9: Small Town Life in Uralla

Sunday, October 17, 2027

Uralla is a classic Australian country town, rich with preserved architecture and colorful stories. On our morning walk, we’ll learn about bushranger lore, including the infamous Captain Thunderbolt, and explore the local museum’s thoughtful displays. After free time for lunch in town, we venture into the surrounding countryside to meet an innovative farmer balancing tradition and adaptation. Merino wool, beef cattle, and agroforestry converge in a model of modern resilience and stewardship. It’s an honest, grounded look at rural life today. Back in town, you might enjoy dinner at one of Uralla’s historic pubs, where hospitality feels refreshingly straightforward and sincere.

day 10: Hunter Valley Vineyards

Monday, October 18, 2027

Today we continue south into the Hunter Valley, one of Australia’s most celebrated wine regions. The drive carries us through scenic New England countryside before vineyards begin to line the horizon. After settling into our hotel in Pokolbin, we enjoy lunch followed by a relaxed tasting at a nearby winery. Semillon and Shiraz—signature varietals of the region—offer a sense of place in every sip. The afternoon light turns golden across the vines, encouraging conversation and lingering. This is a slower day, shaped by landscape, flavor, and the quiet pleasure of sharing a glass in good company.

day 11: Southbound to Sydney

Tuesday, October 19, 2027

Heading south, Sydney greets us with harbor air and a palpable sense of arrival. After reaching the city around midday, we drop our bags and begin exploring The Rocks, where the British First Fleet landed in 1788 and modern Australia’s European chapter began. Cobblestone lanes and sandstone buildings contrast with sleek skyline views. A ferry ride across Sydney Harbour offers sweeping perspectives of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House—icons that feel even more powerful when experienced from the water. Dinner together this evening celebrates our arrival in one of the world’s great harbor cities, vibrant and beautifully situated between land and sea.

day 12: Opera HOuse & City Tales

Wednesday, October 20, 2027

This morning we experience Sydney on foot and by public transport. Beginning in Hyde Park, we stroll past historic civic buildings toward the Royal Botanic Gardens, where sweeping harbor views unfold between sculpted lawns and native plantings. From there, we walk to the Sydney Opera House for a behind-the-scenes guided tour. Learning about its bold design, engineering challenges, and artistic life deepens appreciation for this global symbol. The afternoon is yours to enjoy a museum visit, a neighborhood wander, or simply spend some time along Circular Quay. Sydney feels open and luminous, grounded equally in culture and coastline.

day 13: Beach Time

Thursday, October 21, 2027

Today we head toward the sea, exploring Sydney’s celebrated coastline. At Bondi Beach, surf culture meets laid-back community life. You may choose to walk part of the dramatic coastal path, where sandstone cliffs frame endless Pacific views. Continuing to Watsons Bay, there’s time for fish and chips or simply sitting with harbor breezes and watching boats glide past. Our ferry return to the city offers one last sweeping panorama of Sydney’s remarkable harbor. This evening we gather for a celebratory farewell dinner—raising a glass to new friendships, shared discoveries, and a continent that has unfolded generously before us.
